The Deployment Guide for Clinicians has been developed by clinicians for clinicians. It aims to help clinicians who have been asked to get involved in IT projects understand how they can contribute effectively and what roles and responsibilities they may be asked to undertake.
Anne Cooper, NCL for Nursing at NHS CFH played a leading part in developing the guide: "The traditional view of new IT systems was that it was simply the bolting on of new hardware onto existing procedures and systems, both clinical and non clinical. That has changed. New IT systems are now introduced as part of programme to deliver new ways of working and also to improve clinical safety.
"It is therefore essential that clinicians get involved to ensure that the systems do what they are meant to do and that they do it safely. The Deployment Guide has been developed at the request of clinicians who said there were no easy practical step by step guidance that would help them understand what they would need to do if they got involved in the development and implementation of a new IT system."
It includes explanations of core clinical activities including engagement and safety, and covers the other key areas involved in the introduction of an IT system.
Clinical engagement
Explains the reasons why clinicians need to take the lead in the deployment of new IT systems and gives them the knowledge and tools needed to engage their clinical colleagues and ensure success.
