ICD-10 4th edition data files published
Data files have been published for the fourth edition of ICD-10, the classification used by hospitals in the UK to group types of hospital care for statistical analysis (known as 'coding'). (Published: 10 August 2011)
This represents a significant milestone in delivering on the Secretary of State's White Paper commitment to move to the latest version of the International Classification of Diseases, which is published by the World Health Organisation.
The deadline was brought forward to allow the Information Centre additional time to work on the Healthcare Resource Groups. Building this release involved developing maps showing the equivalent codes in the previous version, introduced to England in 1995, and the latest version.
These 'tables of coding equivalence' are complex, and contain both backwards maps (from the new ICD-10 4th Edition to the current version) and forward maps (from the current version to the new ICD-10 4th Edition). Bespoke tooling has been developed specifically for this release.
The next steps are to help the NHS get equipped to start using the latest version for the go-live in the service on 1 April 2012. This will involve an extensive training programme for the coders in each hospital.
