The NHS is an enormous community requiring services and support which will be greatly enhanced with the introduction of new IT infrastructure, systems and services by the National Programme for IT.

The technology will effectively link the many disparate NHS organisations to create a truly national health service.

However, implementing the National Programme is a huge and complex operation. As such, there will be no 'big bang'; instead, systems will be gradually phased in according to priorities and when NHS organisations are ready to implement them.
