ETD Practitioner Development Toolkit

Delivering 21st century IT with 21st century ETD – An action plan to support and develop the capacity and skills of the Informatics Education, Training and Development (ETD) workforce (PDF, 113Kb) highlighted the importance of ETD in successfully implementing new IT systems and services being introduced by NHS Connecting for Health (NHS CFH).

In response to this requirement, NHS CFH set up a National Reference Group with training colleagues from across the service to develop the first phase of the ETD Practitioner Development Toolkit.

What is the ETD Practitioner Development Toolkit?

The toolkit provides a set of resources and guidance to support trainers and managers in planning their career progression and professional development within the NHS. It has identified many opportunities available to NHS staff working in the ETD community.

Who is the ETD Practitioner Development Toolkit aimed at?

The toolkit is aimed at all NHS staff in training management, delivery or administration positions, as well as senior managers, to help them to plot the progression and succession management of their training teams.

What are the benefits of the ETD Practitioner Development Toolkit?

A highly motivated, progressive ETD workforce is crucial to the successful delivery of the National Programme for IT (NPfIT).

The toolkit can be used by anyone in the ETD community to assess their skills and experience against ETD practitioner job profiles and Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF) outlines that have been agreed with an NHS expert reference group. Once they have done this, ETD practitioners can then establish what experience, qualifications and skills they need to attain and complete in order to stand the best chance possible of moving up the career ladder within the NHS.
