Installation of the system

Following an evaluation of the tenders returned and a short-listing process, Neoteric Technology Limited was awarded the contract for installation of an Electronic Blood Tracking System at Mayday NHS Trust.

An Invitation to Tender (ITT) was issued to several Suppliers of Blood Tracking Systems. Each of the returns to the ITT was evaluated against the Trust's identified requirements including:
  • that it meets the Electronic Clinical Transfusion Management System specification
  • proposed costs
  • suitability of supplier
  • background and stability of the potential supplier
  • maintenance and support capability
  • low risk
  • future developments
  • reporting tools
  • training.

The trust worked closely with Neoteric Technology Ltd and its PLIMS (Pathology Laboratory Information System) supplier to implement an Electronic Blood Tracking System at Mayday NHS Trust.

The pilot is restricted to an area in the London Wing of the Hospital:

  • 2nd floor - main theatres
  • 1st floor - surgical wards Edgecombe 1 & 2
  • Ground floor - Life Blood Suite, High Dependency Unit (HDU), Critical Care Unit (CCU), Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU)

The blood tracking system is able to interface seamlessly with the trust's existing electronic ordering system for blood transfusion request and PLIMS.

Further development was necessary to incorporate the passive radio frequency identification technology (RFID) unique identifier. RFID wristbands were rolled out across the trust to enable patients to move in and out of the pilot areas.

The trust also explored mobile technology available to enable the treatment of patients at the bedside, including tablet PCs. Factors taken into account when choosing the mobil device included:

  • infection control compliance
  • touch screen responsiveness
  • inbuilt RFID and barcode scanning ability
  • weight of device
  • robustness
  • battery life
  • ease of use
  • wireless connectivity
  • suitability for hosting platform to run required software.
