Approved Clinical Coding Trainers

The NHS Classifications Service (NCS) trains and accredits the clinical coding trainers delivering our authorised training courses to the NHS. These courses follow data standard guidelines and using them ensures clinical coding consistency across the NHS.

We achieve this by setting a framework of standards and requirements which includes the use of national standard training materials and evidence of continuous professional development by our approved trainer.

Approved Clinical Coding Trainers must be an Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) and have successfully completed the NHS Classifications Service’s Clinical Coding Trainer Programme. As part of this, they have also successfully completed and been awarded the Training Foundation’s Certificate in Training Delivery Skills under the Trainer Assessment Programme (TAP).

Any trainer delivering clinical coding training to the NHS and not compliant with any part of this framework is not considered an approved clinical coding trainer by the NHS Classifications Service.

Consequently we do not approve or recommend any trainer working outside of the framework as we cannot guarantee the quality of training delivery, or that it complies with current national coding standards. Any organisation employing trainers outside of this framework do so at their own risk, and at the risk of compromising applied data standards.

The NCS reserves the right to withdraw 'approved' status of any individual that fail to comply with any part of the framework that is detailed in the Clinical Coding Toolbox. All Approved Trainers must abide by the 2012 - 13 Approved Clinical Coding Trainer Code of Conduct (PDF, 107.2kB).
