Trainers should have completed all components of the clinical coder's curriculum. In addition, he or she should have:

Clinical coding tools for trainers

The coding tools for trainers are the same as those for clinical coders. For more, take a look at the Clinical Coder's Toolbox. In addition our approved trainers have their own quarterly bulletin giving updates on training materials and essential news on clinical coding training.

Authorised NHS clinical coding trainers that maintain their status receive our national standard course materials for use in delivering training. Our training materials are available to non-NHS trainers at a charge.

Approved Trainers List

The NHS Classifications Service recommend using our approved clinical coding trainers to deliver deliver our authorised training courses to the NHS. Only these trainers using our endorsed training materials can be considered as meeting clinical coding national standards.

Re-Certification for Trainers

You need to think about re-certification if you're an approved trainer and:

  • your certificate in Training Delivery Skills was issued over three years ago; and
  • your organisation does not employ a certified TAP Assessor who can provide regular monitoring and re-certification.

Re-certification takes just one day, and you will benefit from a review of the delivery skills criteria, and receive written and verbal feedback on your delivery skills.

More information about re-certification

For further information, and to book a place on a re-certification day, contact the Training Foundation on 024 7641 1288 or email info@trainingfoundation.com.

By attending the Training Foundation for re-certification you will be able to experience other trainers' delivery sessions.

Alternatively, NHS based trainers can contact the NHS Classifications Service qualified TAP Assessor who can undertake Re-Certification. The certificate will still be issued by the Training Foundation for a Certificate Renewal Fee of £25 + VAT. For further information, contact datastandards@nhs.net.

When you've completed re-certification

After you've completed a Re-certification Day through the training foundation, please let us know via datastandards@nhs.net so we can keep our trainer list up-to-date.

Apprentice trainers wishing to be promoted to Experienced Approved Trainer status to be provided with access to the full range of our national clinical coding training materials should email datastandards@nhs.net to arrange a training assessment.
