UK Coding Review Panel
The UK Coding Review Panel aims to maintain and improve the quality of coded clinical data.
The panel is managed by NHS Connecting for Health and provides a collaborative focus for the coding and classification of morbidity data in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The panel:
-
determines national clinical coding policy and practice, and changes to national UK clinical coding standards
-
reviews important coding issues – including those that require communication with clinicians and specified experts
-
develops clinical coding standards, so there is always a single definitive response to complex coding questions; and
-
identifies ICD issues that need to be addressed by World Health Organisation Collaborating Centres.
How the UK Coding Review Panel become involved in queries
Coding queries are sent into the National Clinical Coding Helpdesk using the National Clinical Coding Query Mechanism accompanied by all relevant supporting documentation. The query is reviewed by helpdesk to provide a resolution according to the published process.
If the nature of the query requires a review by the UK Coding Review Panel it will be submitted at the next scheduled meeting. These meetings are held every eight weeks, and the originator of the query will be notified of the status of the query as this will delay resolution being issued.
Publication of Panel decisions
All UK Coding Review Panel decisions are published in the Coding Clinic as all resolutions are considered national coding standards – for more, see our Publications pages. Resolutions are also included in updates to the Clinical Coding Instruction Manuals.
WHO and the UK Coding Review Panel
The UK Coding Review Panel contributes to the regular revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), providing reports to the advisory board for the WHO Collaborating Centre for the Classification of Diseases, UK.
