eLearning products
We’ve created training materials you can access here online. These are self-teach modules, which you can use in your own time – stopping and starting when you want.
The current eLearning materials are listed below. However we are looking at increasing our portfolio of eLearning products and would welcome your suggestions.
The eLearning package assists your learning by providing you with your scores at the end of each module assessment. These scores are not divulged to any third party, including members of the NHS Classifications Service.
Four-step coding process for ICD-10
The ICD-10 Four Step Coding Process eLearning module will be unavailable from the end of March 2012 so that it can be updated to reflect ICD-10 4th Edition changes in respect of the organisation and structure, additional fifth character and dagger asterisk sequencing. The updated eLearning module will be made available to download via TRUD.
Anatomy and physiology
Promoting an understanding of diseases and operations described in case notes by providing information on body systems, how they work together, and the terminology used to describe them. (N3 connections only). Read more about the Anatomy and Physiology module. This module must be completed prior to attendance on an 18-day Clinical Coding Foundation Course. Any non-NHS delegates booked onto a Foundation Course must email datastandards@nhs.net to be granted access.
A Basic Introduction to Clinical Coding
From April 2012 we will release a new eLearning module called 'A Basic Introduction to Clinical Coding'. The module has been developed so all novice coders can complete this and the existing Anatomy and Physiology eLearning packages prior to joining the full 18-day Clinical Coding Foundation Course. It will ensure all delegates have the same basic understanding before the course so they can get much more out of the valuable classroom time. It also means the course itself can concentrate on the key areas of classification rules and conventions and completing more practical exercises.
The 'Basic Introduction to Clinical Coding' eLearning module will contain the following elements which have been removed from the Clinical Coding Foundation Course.
- What is clinical coding?
- History and Background
- The Coding Process (not the 4 Step Coding Process)
- Dimensions of coding accuracy
- Uses of Coded Data
- Difference between Classifications and Terminologies
- Difference between Mortality and Morbidity Coding
- Key Definitions (Primary Diagnosis, Comorbidity, Hospital Provider Spell, Consultant Episode and Definition of an Intervention)
- National Clinical Coding Query Mechanism
- HRGs and PbR
This is available from the improved Technology Reference data Update Distribution (TRUD). Please ensure you follow the installation instructions in the "Read Me!" document in the release pack to ensure you are able to access the module without any problems.
