Training, Resources & Forums

We appreciate that individuals have different calls on their time as well as different learning styles and requirements. To accommodate this we offer a range of ways for individuals to learn more about SNOMED CT and its uses:

Webinars (online training)

Our first series of webinars on SNOMED CT was successfully completed on 29th September. The PowerPoint slides, a summary of the questions raised with responses, useful links given during the webinars and other information that may be of interest can be found on NHS Networks . Full versions of the webinars, including audio, can be downloaded from our Technology Reference Data Update Distribution Service (TRUD) website. Previews of the webinars are available here but to use the full functionality, transcript and links it is advisable to download them in full.

Due to demand the first webinar in the series will be repeated.

To register for the webinar click on the date; details will then be sent to your registered e-mail:

NOTE: If you are not taken directly to the SNOMED CT webinar page, please use the Browse option on the left of the screen and browse to the date you wish to register for where you will see the SNOMED CT webinar with an option to register for the webinar.

Please also note that the actual webinar will start at 10.30 but you are free to join from 10.00 to allow for time to set up.

NHS dm+d and SNOMED CT UK Drug Extension Webinar

The NHS dictionary of medicines and devices (dm+d) is a terminological resource containing unique identifiers and associated textual descriptions for representing medicines and medical devices in information systems and electronic communications.  As the NHS preferred medicines terminology, dm+d is the basis for all medicine and medical device codes forming the SNOMED CT® UK Drug Extension. The SNOMED CT UK Drug Extension is produced to provide seamless links from SNOMED CT to dm+d through one terminological structure.

The webinar provides a useful starting point for anyone who wishes to learn about the NHS dm+d and the SNOMED CT UK drug extension for the first time, and is aimed at both clinical and technical people.

A recording of this webinar will shortly be available for download from our Technology Reference Data Update Distribution Service (TRUD).  This webinar is not scheduled to be run again in the near future, however, if you have a number of people who would benefit from it and would like a live webinar please contact snomedtraining@nhs.net to discuss your requirements.

Forums

UKTC runs a forum every two months where those involved with implementation can meet. Members of the forum jointly consider matters relating to implementation of terminologies from the UKTC, primarily SNOMED CT, and the NHS dictionary of medicines and devices (dm+d).

It seeks to address issues; allowing cross-fertilisation of ideas and information exchange. As appropriate, special interest groups may also meet around particular topics.
The forum rotates its meetings between Birmingham, Leeds and London but also makes its materials available via an extranet site.

Anyone with an interest in SNOMED CT and/or dm+d is welcome to contact the organisers for more information on the forum, or you can just join the mailing list and get access to the available materials. If you wish to find out more and/or attend the forum, please contact datastandards@nhs.net.

E-learning

We have developed an online learning module that provides an overview of SNOMED CT. For staff within the NHS, this is also available through the National Learning Management System and confirmation of its completion will be registered within your learner record.

The Module can also be downloaded and put into your local VLE. An outline of the course can be found in the SNOMED e-learning pages. Register first to download the module.

Brochures

A range of brochures for end users have been developed including:

SNOMED CT User Guide

As SNOMED CT is being developed collaboratively as an international standard, you will find a range of useful materials as well as a User Guide at the IHTSDO website.

Technical Manuals and Guidance

Technical users will find useful detailed manuals and guides available in the Publication area on the IHTSDO website. Technical documentation is also included in the sub packs of SNOMED CT via the Technology Reference data Update Distribution service (TRUD). The document 'SNOMED CT: Where to start' (PDF, 722.3kB) provides a summary description of key areas and provides appropriate links to relevant technical documentation.

Case Studies

"Leeds Teaching Hospitals decided to embrace SNOMED CT in their Emergency Department as a way to reduce duplication of data entry, ensure recording in a consistent way, and thus facilitating analysis, as well as supporting completion of the Commissioning Data Set returns. This Leeds Case Study (PDF 100kb) provides an overview of their achievements."

"Moorfields Eye Hospital decided to develop their own application to be used across all 13 of their sites as a way to reduce duplication of data entry, ensure recording in a consistent manner, to improve the sharing of information and the ability to search records from any site. This Moorfields Eye Hospital case study (PDF, 63.6kB) provides an overview of their achievements."
