Systems in migration

The Personal Demographics Service will replace two existing national systems:

• NHS Numbers for Babies (NN4B) Service - enabling babies to have an NHS Number from birth, for life, which is important as vital tests and medical treatment are administered in the first six weeks of life.
• Central Health Register Inquiry System (CHRIS) - which is the current register of patient GP registrations, operated by the NHS Central Register (NHSCR). This service facilitates the movement of patients' medical records between GPs.

The PDS incorporates functions and data that enable it to interact with National Health Applications and Infrastructure Services (NHAIS) - or 'Exeter' systems.
