Informatics Capability Maturity Model

What is ICMM?

The ICMM is a qualitative self-assessment tool that will help you determine how capable or mature your organisation is from an informatics perspective. Using the tool can help identify actions to improve your business performance enabled by informatics. The ICMM Overview Presentation below provides a general summary.

Who should use it?

The model is aimed at business leaders, particularly executives with influence over business strategy.

What insight will it provide?

It will provide a quick and easy starting point for organisational level discussions about the need to develop informatics capability, and the benefits that strategic informatics planning can yield. The assessment will help you to identify the actions needed to embed informatics capability development within your business strategy.

How does it relate to other NHS capability tools ?

The NHS has developed three complementary models which all aim help raise standards, improve performance, provide assurance, and share good practice around informatics capability. The overview slide below illustrates the relationship between these tools:

What will I be expected to assess?

You will be asked to evaluate your organisation through the five capability dimensions listed below:

  • Managing information
  • Using business intelligence
  • Using information technology
  • Aligning business and informatics
  • Managing change

Each dimension has five levels of maturity ranging from 'basic' (least mature) to 'innovative' (most mature). You will be able to view and compare the characteristics for each maturity level. This will allow you to recognise your organisation, and position it appropriately on the maturity scale.

How long will the assessment take?

The model takes no more than 30 minutes to read, and with debate it should take no more than two hours to assess your organisation's maturity.

What is the self-assessment process?
