Chief executive and board development

There are an increasing number of development tools aimed at chairs, chief executives and directors within health and social care.

The Productive Leader programme

The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement (the NHS Institute) has developed a series of tools to assist chief executives and board members within the NHS to be productive leaders.

The Productive Leader series is about developing high performing leadership teams to help drive a high performing NHS.

It uses the principles of Lean Thinking and Six Sigma to enable leadership teams to reduce waste and variation in personal work processes. The programme has been developed over a two year period in co-production with NHS executive teams in acute hospital trusts, primary care trusts and mental health trusts.

As a programme, it features a combination of facilitated and self-development modules, supporting teams to identify improvement in high impact areas such as email management, meetings and workload management.

The NHS Institute is also hosting a series of regional masterclasses around the country to demonstrate the programme and its benefits.

Spaces on these masterclasses are limited so book online.

Tools available online within the Productive Leader series include:

  • templates to download relating to each programme module
  • members area for those registered on the programme
  • links and details of other useful books and resources.

Development programme portfolio

The NHS Institute also offers development programmes for chief executives and board members. The content of these reflects the diversity in experience, skills and development history among NHS senior directors. Each programme is mapped against the leadership qualities framework.

Board members can combine this tool with the Institute’s Organisation Development tool that enables a robust assessment of the organisation’s strengths and weaknesses.

Tools are supported by accredited facilitators and involve a mix of online surveys and face to face interviews.

For further information on how to make use of these tools, contact leadership@institute.nhs.uk

Executive coaching

Executive coaching is one of the core elements of the NHS Institute's support of chairs, chief executives and executive directors. A one-to-one focused and bespoke relationship is generally the single most effective development intervention that a senior leader in the NHS can access.

You can search for a coach in your SHA area online. You can also find articles about executive coaching and its benefits.

Chief Executive community

The NHS Institute has set up a new online resource for the NHS Chief Executive community. Working together, the Department of Health (DH) and the NHS Institute have developed a secure resource portal for dissemination of information and knowledge sharing in order to promote best practices across the NHS. This site is unique in that it is specifically dedicated to be used as a communication channel between the chief executive community of the NHS, the DH and the NHS Institute.

The benefit of this portal is that elements of the content will be available exclusively and will include a document library, specific publications, podcasts and forums. The portal includes the ability to be informed by email when significant new material is posted on the site.

The King’s Fund – leadership consultancy services

Services offered by The King's Fund for chairs, chief executives and directors include skilled consultants to support clinicians and managers within health and social care organisations and systems to develop and implement change agendas. The King’s Fund can also provide in-house development programmes specific to the needs of your organisation.

Board Leadership Programme

The Board Leadership Programme (BLP) is a development programme run by The King's Fund for chairs and non-executive directors in the NHS in London. The overall aim of the BLP is to maximise the contribution of chairs and non-executive directors (NEDs) to the effective leadership of the NHS in London.

Since the programme began in May 2000, all health authorities and NHS trusts in the London region have been represented at programme events. The BLP is funded by the strategic health authority and NHS trusts in London, including foundation trusts, and with support from The King’s Fund.
