ETD Standard 3 - Training Needs Analysis

The purpose of a training needs analysis (TNA) is to outline how the organisation's objectives will be met through the delivery of training through improving and/or changing the skills, knowledge and/or attitudes of those directly involved or affected by the ‘change'.

TNAs are carried out to assess the training needs of staff and to identify gaps in knowledge, before the planning for training can begin. Without it, the correct level of resource required to design and deliver your training cannot be identified.

A TNA can be carried out at different levels:

  1. Organisational, usually to meet strategic objectives
  2. A specific project or department where new or changed ways of working may be   introduced through a new computer system
  3. An individual, generally as part of their appraisal.

This ETD standard and supporting guidance documents will help you prepare for and complete a TNA for a project, department or organisation. A number of templates are available to support the development of your own TNAs.
