Improving portfolio, programme and project management (P3M) practice in the NHS
Our focus is to establish practices and a recognised and respected P3M profession across the NHS that attracts, develops and retains the best people.
Best practice P3M standards, structures and methodologies can be used to deliver change and make it stick.
The P3M Improvement Programme was developed to address external findings that there is a shortage of experienced change, programme and project managers, in particular with experience of implementing applications that are being delivered by IM&T programmes.
The improvement programme covers four broad areas:
- Building organisation capability to deliver successful programmes and projects
- Establishing and maintaining a collaborative P3M community to share best practice and promote recognised standards and opportunities
- Building workforce capability by developing P3M careers paths and development routes
- Ensuring a competent and professional P3M workforce by identifying learning and development opportunities, tailored to NHS needs and aligned to competency frameworks, NHS job roles and industry standards.
P3M Resource Centre
The Portfolio, Programme & Project Management (P3M) resource centre has been developed by the Department of Health P3M Team in close collaboration with the NHS. It supports NHS staff and organisations to assess their portfolio, programme and project management practice and skills. The resource centre brings together a set of materials, tools and guidance covering both organisational and workforce capability and capacity that can help organisations to prepare for their future.
