NSTS Closure
NHS CFH has been working with the NHS over the past few years to replace the NHS Strategic Tracing Service (NSTS) with the NHS Care Records Service. In order to minimise the impact on NHS services, a phased timetable has been agreed for the closure of NSTS:
- Online tracing – CLOSED.
- Media Batch tracing (CD/DVD & Tape) – CLOSED.
- PKI Batch tracing (e-mail) - CLOSED.
- Reporting – 30 November 2009.
- Service closure – 30 November 2009.
If a Trust is not ready for a closure milestone then they can agree an extension with their SHA.
Each Trust has a nominated closure lead responsible for co-ordinating this transition. Support is provided to the closure leads through the NSTS regional and national user groups and a dedicated team at NHS Connecting for Health.
Once NSTS is closed, the Spine Personal Demographics Service (PDS) will become the demographics master for the NHS, providing a single national source of demographics and NHS Number information for the NHS in England and Isle of Man.

The following sections provide information on the activities that NSTS users must follow in order to replace the existing service - any further information is available from cfh.nsts-closure@nhs.net:
