Glossary of terms

Accredited Systems - AS

An accredited system is a system that is allowed to connect to Spine to meet specific business requirements which include messaging interactions that have been approved in aspects of architecture, information governance and security for a specified version of the system, on a particular platform.

Common Assurance Process - CAP

The testing process for systems assured by Connecting for Health.

ebXML management service (ping/pong)

ebXML management service (or ping/pong service). An ebXML level service ping. Sending a ping message to an MHS that supports the ebXML ping-functionality will let the remote MHS respond with a "pong" message, thus assisting in determining the remote service is available.

End Point Registration - EPR

The part of SDS in which information about Accredited Systems and Services is held/the process by which a system becomes an Accredited System and has a discoverable profile.

Enhanced Reporting System - ERS

Interface to allow users to view existing/create ad-hoc reports based on information in SDS.

Handle Administrator Messages - HAM

Handle Administrator Messages (HAM) is a manual error resolution and retry facility. Once automatic retries from HUM have been exhausted, the message is passed to HAM for resolution by an administrator.

Handle Undeliverable Messages - HUM

Handle Undeliverable Messages (HUM) is an automated 'slow retry' facility. This follows an algorithm to periodically retry the message over a longer period of hours or days.

Health Level 7 - HL7

An accredited clinical messaging standard in use within the NHS.

Lightweight Directory Access Protocol - LDAP

Networking protocol via which access to directory data is offered to Spine and trusted systems.

Message Handling Service - MHS

A software component that handles connectivity to the Transaction Messaging Service as well as sending and receiving messages on the Transaction Messaging Services.

Message Implementation Manual - MIM

NHS Connecting for Health's extended and descriptive definition of the HL7 messages used.

NHS Care Records Service - NHS CRS

A secure service that links patient information from different parts of the NHS electronically so authorised NHS staff and patients have the information they need to make care decisions. There are two elements to the NHS CRS; detailed records (held locally) and the Summary Care Record (held nationally).

The NHS CRS will enables each person's detailed records to be securely shared between different parts of the local NHS, such as the GP surgery and hospital.

Patients will also be able to have a summary of their important health information, known as their Summary Care Record, available to authorised NHS staff treating them anywhere in the NHS in England. Patients will be able to access their Summary Care Record using the secure website HealthSpace.

NHS Connecting for Health - NHS CFH

NHS Connecting for Health was established on 1st April 2005 as the single national IT provider for the NHS.

Organisation Administration Service - OAS

The components of SDS that enable the management of NHS Organisation information and its publication.

Pathology Messaging Implementation Programme - PMIP

The national programme for pathology messaging between pathology laboratory systems and GP systems.

Personal Spine Information Services - PSIS

The Services include a health record service to store and provide information such as summary or status information, event-based information, and non-event related career documentation.

Role Based Access Control - RBAC

Defines the access privileges permitted to a given role.

Security Assertion Mark-up Language - SAML

Standard for exchanging authentication and authorization data between security domains, that is between an identity provider and a service provider. SAML standardises the representation of these credentials in an XML format called assertions, enhancing the interoperability between disparate applications.

Spine Directory Service - SDS

Central directory of organisations, users and services for consumption by spine-related applications.

Spine User Directory - SUD

The part of SDS in which information about Spine users is held (e.g. name, role profile code, unique user identifier).

Secondary Uses Service - SUS

A system designed to provide management and clinical information based on a pseudonymised set of clinical data.

SUS is the means by which information and analysis will be available for secondary purposes like performance monitoring, service planning, commissioning and clinical audit. It will also provide support to Payment by Results.

Transaction and Messaging Spine - TMS

The message handling application element of the Spine.

User Role Profile - URP

The role profile of a given user in the SUD.
