Newborn Blood Spot Screening FAQs

Question 1: Will this project permit GPs and Health Visitors to see the results?

Answer: In the first phase we haven't specified that the labs should copy the results to systems other than the child health system.

It is our intention to add this facility in a later phase. However, if your child health system has a shared database with your GP system, then your GPs and Health Visitors will be able to view the results in the first phase.

Question 2: As a screening lab, we're really keen to get a feed of the demographics so that we don't have to manually key everything in from the blood spot card. Are you planning to support this facility?

Answer: We recognise the high value of an electronic feed of new-born demographics. We have not addressed this in the first phase of the project, but have plans to tackle it in a second phase.

Question 3: What is the relationship between this project and the newborn blood spot label project?

Answer: In designing the messaging specification for this project, the blood spot demographics label specification has been taken into account.

It is not necessary to receive all blood spot cards with labels that conform to the national blood spot label specification, but the demographics carried on cards with these labels will facilitate the smooth operation of the messaging capability.
