Training
With the implementation of any new system there is a requirement to train system users. Implementing NHS Pathways requires more than just a simple system training programme, it involves a significant changes in the way 999, NHS 111 or other urgent and emergency calls are assessed and handled.
NHS Pathways training has been developed over the last five years by the NHS Pathways team including clinicians, educational and IT specialists.
In 2010, approximately 350 users received NHS Pathways training, with the introduction of training delivery partners this has risen to over 1000 users in 2011. This has included staff from Ambulance Trusts, GP out-of-hours providers, clinicians such as nurses and paramedics and many more. Training is tailored to different care settings.

Training provisions
Until recently NHS Pathways training has been delivered on a 'Train the Trainer' basis by a small training team within the national NHS Pathways team. To manage demand and support implementations across England new training arrangements have been put in place.
Call handlers using NHS Pathways
The feedback from trainees has been very positive and their comments and suggestions for future training courses are always considered.
Call handlers using NHS Pathways and the Directory of Services are able to refer callers to a service that is best able to meet their needs, taking into account their location, the time of day of their call and the capacity of local services.
- Paul Galloway, Single Point of Access call hander, based at North East Ambulance Service, explains how NHS Pathways and the Directory of Services is helping patients find the right treatment and care for their symptoms.
- Shaun Harris, Single Point of Access and Emergency Medical Systems Operator (PDF, 145Kb) (PDF, 114.6kB), explains how he applies NHS Pathways training.
Clinical re-profiling tutorial
Clinical re-profiling of organisations in the Directory of Services is now taking place across England, in the move from version 6.3 to 6.4 of NHS Pathways.
A video tutorial has been developed to assist services with their re-profiling, and this can be found on the Clinical re-profiling tutorial page. The aim of the video is ensure that the description of each service, and the symptom groups and discriminators they have selected on the Directory of Services, are populated correctly.
